A withdrawn former official addresses an imagined audience from his corner of St Petersburg. He insists on explaining himself, then challenges his own explanations. His arguments about reason and freedom lead into memories of encounters in which injured pride repeatedly frustrates his wish to be recognised. Dostoevsky makes this unreliable voice the centre of a sharp inquiry into self-consciousness and alienation. The narrator can diagnose his failures without escaping them, giving the work its unsettling mix of humour, hostility and vulnerability. Readers of philosophical and psychological fiction will find much to examine in his contradictions.
