Malcolm Gladwell asks how exceptional achievement is shaped by circumstances beyond an individual’s talent or personality. Outliers shifts attention toward families, cultural backgrounds, generations and the opportunities available at particular moments. Its accounts of well-known achievers are used to question explanations of success that concentrate on personal qualities while leaving the surrounding conditions out of view. Moving between music, sport, business and other fields, Gladwell develops his argument through stories of people and the environments that influenced their paths. Bill Gates and the Beatles are among his examples. The book presents success as something to investigate in context: where people come from, what they practise and which opportunities become possible. These are Gladwell’s interpretations of achievement, rather than a formula guaranteeing comparable results.
