The Foreshadowing of Bangladesh
Harun-or-Rashid traces the Bengal Muslim League’s rise and the competing ideas of statehood that preceded the partition of Bengal.
এই বই সম্পর্কে
How did the Bengal Muslim League become a dominant political force, and what kind of future did Bengali Muslim leaders imagine? Harun-or-Rashid approaches these questions through the party’s history between 1906 and 1947. He examines its organisation, leadership, internal disputes, supporters and relationship with the all-India Muslim League, alongside the decline of the Krishak Praja Party. The study places particular weight on differences within the Pakistan movement. It considers how Bengali leaders interpreted the Lahore Resolution and explores proposals for an independent eastern state or a united Bengal. The 1947 initiative associated with H. S. Suhrawardy is examined together with the responses of British officials, Congress leaders and Jinnah. The book argues for a connection between these earlier political aspirations and Bangladesh’s later emergence. It gives readers a way to investigate that interpretation through the institutions, alliances and competing national projects of late colonial Bengal.
