রচনা: উইলিয়াম শেক্সপীয়ার
A loan taken to help a friend pursue marriage places a Venetian merchant in danger, drawing love, religious prejudice and the meaning of mercy into the same dispute.
এই বই সম্পর্কে
Bassanio hopes to marry Portia, but his courtship depends on borrowed money and a test established by her father's will. His friend Antonio guarantees a loan from Shylock, agreeing to a bond with an extraordinary penalty: a pound of Antonio's flesh if repayment fails. A romantic venture becomes a threat to a life. Moving between Venice and Belmont, Shakespeare brings marriage, friendship and wealth into conflict with revenge and the law. Shylock's experience of anti-Jewish hostility complicates the comedy, while Portia's ingenuity brings questions of justice and mercy to the foreground. The play invites readers to examine who receives compassion and who is excluded from it.
