Lear decides to give up royal power and divide his kingdom among his three daughters. Goneril and Regan flatter him, while Cordelia refuses to turn her love into a public performance. Angered by her answer, he rejects the daughter whose honesty he fails to recognise. Lear's loss of authority leaves him exposed to the cruelty of those he has rewarded. Alongside his story, Gloucester is deceived about his own children. Shakespeare brings the two families' suffering together in a tragedy concerned with judgement, dependence and the difficulty of seeing loyalty before it is too late.
